Here's an exercise that's great for what I like to call intermittent palm muting. So what I'm doing here is palm muting intermittently. My first four notes consist of two palm-muted, followed by two open strings. After that, it's just a series of hammer-ons and pull-offs. And then here's where it gets really interesting. The next phrase I'm palm-muting on the down plucks and then letting the up-plucks ring open. The rest of the phrasing is just variations of that.
