EVERYBODY EATS: AKRON'S LONGEST TABLE. In a Rust Belt city where over half the residents can't afford the monthly cost of living, a downtown potluck becomes an open-air reckoning with hunger, belonging, and civic joy. What begins as a shared meal drawing hundreds of Akronites from neighborhoods that rarely mix, turns into a powerful conversation about food equity and mutual aid. Civic Saturday Akron organizers took as their theme “civic joy” as defined by the American Academy of Arts and Sciences — “a commitment to creative possibility in the face of pain and struggle.” “No one is coming to save us,” is the film’s opening line. Across a single afternoon, we see what a community does with that realization: strangers from neighborhoods that rarely connect break bread together, and a place long defined by decline reimagines what they can build together. “Our vision was simple: a table where everyone is welcome, and no one goes without,” said Kate Tucker, co-founder of Civic Saturday Akron, a Citizen University Fellow, and a co-director of the film. “The film is an invitation to imagine what’s possible when a community recognizes the abundance already around it and shares it. This is about shared civic power.” The Longest Table began in 2021 in NYC as a way for neighbors to reconnect and has since grown into hundreds of community-organized gatherings in cities across the country. The first Akron edition was produced by Civic Saturday Akron, a grassroots group of Akronites hosting joyful neighborhood gatherings to celebrate community and shared civic power. “We’re really just talking about living in community with each other,” said Imokhai Okolo, a Civic Saturday Akron Fellow and founder of People Feeding People, the Akron mobile free-grocery distribution program featured in the film. “Food is medicine. Community is also medicine.” Subscribe to @OTHRWRLDStudios for a first look at the film and more community-emergent stories. According to the lighthouse directory, there are just under 19,000 lighthouses worldwide and here in Victoria, we’re visiting the oldest surviving, officially built lighthouse here on the Australian mainland. Cape Otway Lightstation. Sitting adjacent to the Great Otway National Park, this remote location is not only home to rich history but also a well-preserved natural environment. It is as if the land has sat untouched for over 150 years ago. And as the centerpiece of the attraction, this still-working lighthouse serves as an emblem of early Victorian development. Completed in 1848 and constructed of sandstone, this traffic sign of the sea is not only a source of national pride, it’s a beacon of hope. And it is by the passion and effort of individuals like Alex Parry that the history of this place and its early visitors is still being shared today. Here in Hawaii, rain is simply a part of everyday life and if you ask one of the locals, they're sure to tell you that rain on an old tin roof is a reminder of home. It was under a certain tin roof garage where food became a definition of home and love for one young chef. Today, working with farmers, fishermen, and ranchers to create honest ono food, Chef Sheldon is taking his tin roof love and spreading it about! Upon arrival at Tin Roof, it's obvious: word gets around. The crowds here are an everyday occurrence and the menu is essentially a history lesson in pacific island culture. Chef Sheldon's pride in honoring tradition is evident. For more information about our program, visit: http://www.travelwithdidiayer.com #hawaii #maui #mauicuisine
